What is an Advance Medical Directive?
In Virginia, an Advance Medical Directive has two components:
1) A living will - This is where you provide your end-of-life instructions.
2) A medical power of attorney - This is the person you name who can speak for you if you are unable to make medical decisions for yourself.
Why is the Advance Medical Directive so important?
By signing an advance medical directive, you are giving your loved ones relief and comfort.
By providing them with your end-of-life instructions, you are making sure they know your wishes.
By naming someone to speak on your behalf for periods of incapacity, you are ensuring that doctors and nurses know who they can take directions from.
When someone becomes incapacitated who has not signed an advance medical directive, disputes can occur about care which sometimes have to be resolved in court. This just adds cost and contention in an already tender time.
This is also completely avoidable.
Creating an advance medical directive is one of the most caring things you can do for your loved ones.
